Position Overview
The Refrigeration Mechanic will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, servicing, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning systems across the university campus. The role ensures that all HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) and refrigeration equipment operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
Qualifications Required
- National Certificate or Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
- Class 1
- Refrigerant Handling Certification is an added advantage
- Minimum of 2–4 years’ practical experience
- Experience in institutional settings (e.g., universities, hospitals, hotels) is an added advantage
Skills & Competencies
- Assist in planning upgrades and replacement of obsolete equipment
- Ensure proper use and care of tools, equipment, and materials
Key Responsibilities
- Install, service, and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems (HVAC)
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance on all cooling and ventilation systems
- Diagnose faults and carry out necessary repairs on compressors, condensers, evaporators, and control systems
- Monitor system performance and ensure optimal efficiency and energy use
- Respond to breakdowns and emergency maintenance requests promptly
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and reports
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards (including refrigerant handling)
- Detect and repair refrigerant leaks and ensure proper gas charging procedures
- Inspect and test systems to ensure proper functioning after repairs or installation
- Work closely with other maintenance teams (electrical, mechanical, civil)
- Assist in planning upgrades and replacement of obsolete equipment
- Ensure proper use and care of tools, equipment, and materials
- Support procurement by providing specifications for parts and equipment
